Kindergarten Units of Study
Unit 1- Spot va a la escuela
During the first 6 weeks we practice our Spanish class agreements! Yo demuestro amabilidad. I show kindness. We work together in ALL classes to show kindness to ourselves, to our peers, and to our teachers as part of strengthening our CREW. Yo miro y yo escucho. I look and I listen. In Spanish class this is very important because Señora Rodés gives a lot of comprehensible input in the target language (I speak completely in Spanish!). I use a lot of movements, visuals, games, realia, manipulatives, picture books, songs, dance, etc. to allow for comprehension and acquisition of the language. Yo hablo español! Of course, in Spanish class, we speak Spanish! I always encourage students to respond in Spanish, using as much of the language as possible, speaking in complete sentences when appropriate (even to ask to go to the bathroom!). A lot of the language production at this level is repetition or through a script or song.
We lear the colors rojo, azul, verde, y amarillo as well as vocabulary for our classroom tools, los útiles, and how we greet each other.

Unit 2- La comunidad
Students learn the names for several community helpers. They learn the song San Severino about a fictitious town in Mexico and the people who work there, including the women who makes tortillas every morning and the people that wash clothes by hand! We do a more focused study of el bombero- the firefighter. Students learn the tools the firefighter uses and we sing the song Los bomberos van de prisa. We then get to video chat with a group of volunteer firefighters in Condega, Nicaragua! One firefighter shares the tools they use and students are able to ask a few questions. The students also make firefighter puppets to practice using the vocabulary.

Unit 3- El cuerpo (Body parts)
Kindergarten is well into the second unit on feelings and we are about to start talking about our third unit, body parts! These are some of my favorite topics to teach because there are so many songs and games that we can play to learn the parts of the body and different actions that we do. For example, have you ever played Simón dice...? Students are able to identify and express their feelings through pictures, movements, and songs.

Unit 4- La ropa y el tiempo
This unit 4 is based on the book by Jonathan London, Froggy gets dressed. We read the book and the students identify and describe the clothing and retell the story. We learn the words for winter, el invierno, and snow, NIEVE! Sometime it snows on one of our retelling days, which is a perfect teachable moment. Students also create a small libro de la ropa to identify and describe clothing and learn all about shapes in order to design their own camisa (shirt) and work with shape patterns.
We read:
Also check out Calico Spanish (kidsimmersion) on Youtube for some fun songs!

Unit 5- La familia y tradiciones!
Students learn of some family traditions in Mexico, such as drinking chocolate caliente, and hitting the piñata! Along with learning the names of the family members in Spanish, we play piñata in class, sing the birthday song in Spanish, and drink chocolate! We also read the book, El chocolate de mi abuelita while enjoying our drink.
