Bienvenidos a la clase de Español @ WE!
Here you will find information on the K-2 Spanish program at Westchester Elementary in Decatur, GA. Please click on the links at the top for information on each grade level' s curriculum, vocabulary, and current units of study, as well as links to websites for practice at home and news of community events.
In order to familiarize the students with the breadth of the Spanish-speaking world, I am inviting parents and students that have experiences traveling to any of the 21 Spanish-speaking countries, to come share a little about their time in those countries! Whether you were fully immersed for weeks or years or you took a cruise for a few days, any experience is valued. Your presentations can be simple (10-15 minutes), or longer (approx. 30 minutes with a presentation and possible activity). You can share words, pictures, books, songs, artifacts, souvenirs, etc. This is a great way to make these countries more real for our students. I will keep this resource and contact you next year if you are interested in coming in!* ¡Muchas gracias!
In Spring, 2nd graders will be studying a unit on Mexico, so if you have been to this country, I may be in contact sooner rather than later!
Please fill out this form!

Special Events
Students learning about the Mexican celebration and traditions of el Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, as part of our family unit. On November 1st and 2nd, Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, young and old, celebrate the lives of the loved ones they have lost by gathering together, enjoying special foods, and decorating tables, or ofrendas/altares, with flowers, food, photos, and candles to remember their loved ones. There are often parades as well. Many families bring flowers to decorate the graves of their loved ones. It is a happy time to gather together, full of fun traditions for all ages, like making and decorating candy sugar skulls and eating sweet pan de muerto. Other traditional foods that might be enjoyed are tamales and mole.
Our students collaborate with students at Winnona Park and Clairemont to create an ofrenda at the Atlanta History Center's festival for el Día de los Muertos, which usually take place the last Sunday of October. This is a great FREE family event that also includes traditional musical and dance performances.

La Maestra de Español@WE
About Señora Rodés:
I was born in Cuba where I started my carrier as a music teacher. I moved to Spain in 1995, living there for 17 years. I hold a BA in Music Pedagogy from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid. I moved to Atlanta in 2012. Prior to working at CSD, I was Spanish teacher at The Friends School of Atlanta. Experience has taught me that using music is one of the best ways to teach Spanish. It is also one of the most enjoyable activities we do in class. I love traveling, teaching Spanish and learning something new every day. |
